For example, the indigenous Bolivians celebrate the Ñatitas festival – the festival of skulls – in November. The atmosphere is like a folk festival – the meeting place is the local cemetery. With them the head of deceased acquaintances and relatives, decorated with flowers and not infrequently with a burning cigarette in their mouth. The indigenous Bolivians believe that the Ñatitas bring them luck, help them and accompany them through life. The Ñatitas festival goes back to a ritual of the Aymara Indians – since time immemorial, the mortal remains of their dead relatives have been worshipped to commemorate them. In this way, the deceased are supposed to protect the living and bring them luck.

Some primitive peoples in Southeast Asia, Melanesia and in the northwestern lowlands of South America still attribute a magical energy potential to skulls and engage in headhunting. Here, the head of a human being is captured as a trophy and in some cases elaborately decorated. This ritual is one of the oldest in the world and was widespread all over the world. In Europe, skulls were used as a kind of vessel for drinking and in China and Japan, skulls were collected as a kind of war memento. Headhunting had different motives: it served to demoralise and deter enemies or was also a sign of increasing the social prestige of the person doing the killing. It was not uncommon for a skull to be captured so that the victim’s life force would pass to the hunter, or so that a boy would become a man and be considered a complete member of society.

However differently cultures deal with this symbol of finitude, they are united by the idea that something else awaits us after our death, or at least that our end can have an influence on the future.

„Art only exists because death exists.”“
Steven Gregory

Miao Art Gallery presents the exhibition Skull Love with analogue as well as digital artworks and objects from 10.04. to 30.04.2021.
